Based on the international best-seller by Sarit Yishai-Levi, The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem is a multigenerational series about Jerusalem’s Armoza family, one of the city’s oldest Sephardic lineages. This series brings to life a wealth of emotional human stories that are full of color, passion, tragedy, and interwoven with both Judeo-Spanish tradition and the history of a nascent Israel.
The series illuminates stories of the love, hatred, jealousy and pain of the three Armoza sisters – LUNA, RAHELIKA, and BECKY- and that of their parents, grandparents and children. Set against a vacillating historical backdrop, the series sees its characters through such contrasting conditions as dire poverty - bordering on starvation - and prosperity. The story follows the family members and their personal dramas from the early 20th century Ottoman-era, through the British Mandate and the War of Independence, to the 1960s modern day state, entwining the personal stories of the Armoza family with the country’s tumultuous historical narrative.
Amidst the backdrop of some of the most pivotal moments in the country’s history lies the story of a complex family whose every member bears a different burden – a secret, a sadness, or an unrequited love. This is a broad, emotional drama infused with suspense, romance, and complicated family relationships.
